The Green Municipal Fund’s (GMF) Community Buildings Retrofit (CBR) initiative supports local governments and not-for-profit organizations in retrofitting public buildings to improve energy performance, lower operating and maintenance costs, and transition to cleaner energy solutions over time.
 
The CBR funding offer supports all stages of project development, helping communities of all sizes to significantly reduce GHG emissions, while extending their asset’s life cycle. CBR can help your municipality through the following funding options: community building monitoring and analysis grants, community building recommissioning grants, GHG reduction pathway feasibility study grant and capital funding.

Eligible Community

  • Canadian municipal governments, with the exception of the Low Carbon Cities Canada (LC3) municipalities: the cities of Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, and the Halifax Regional Municipality
  • Municipalities’ project partners, including private sector entities, non-profit and Indigenous communities, among others.

Specific Eligibility Requirements

Building eligibility:• Existing community buildings (e.g., indoor ice rinks, in-door sports arenas, indoor swimming pools, community/ recreation centres, arts and culture facilities, and libraries) owned by municipalities or not-for-profit organization• Other municipal buildings when included in a portfolio with at least one eligible community building

Description of Funding

 

  • For GHG reduction pathway feasibility study grant, up to 80% of eligible costs to a maximum of $65,000 for a single building or up to $200,000 per portfolio of buildings.
  • For the GHG impact retrofit capital projects, a maximum of $5 million per project. Up to 25% as a grant and the remainder as a loan. Combined loan and grant for up to 80% of eligible project costs.
  • For the GHG reduction pathway retrofit capital project, a maximum of $5 million per project. Up to 25% as a grant and the remainder as a loan. Combined loan and grant for up to 80% of eligible project costs.
